This Vintage Bakhtiari Kilim is a distinctive Persian tribal flat-weave rug measuring 1.83 by 1.38 metres. Handwoven by the Bakhtiari nomads of Iran, it embodies traditional craftsmanship with bold geometric designs and natural dyes.
The rug features prominent diamond medallions layered with intricate smaller motifs, creating a dynamic and textured visual effect. Angular lines and zigzag borders reflect the Bakhtiari weavers’ connection to their mountainous environment and tribal heritage, with patterns often symbolising protection, nature, and nomadic life.
Dyed with organic plant-based colours, the palette includes deep reds and terracotta tones representing strength and vitality, midnight blue for wisdom and spirituality, and ivory and earthy browns providing warmth and contrast. These hues have aged naturally, enhancing the rug’s vintage character.
Unlike pile rugs, this Kilim is flat-woven, making it lightweight yet robust. Its medium size suits various uses such as a decorative floor covering, wall hanging, or draped accent piece, bringing a touch of Persian tribal art and history into Australian homes.
As a genuine vintage piece, signs of wear may be present, adding to its unique charm. The Kilim has been professionally cleaned and repaired where necessary to preserve its condition.
Selected pieces can be viewed in the intended room so scale, colour and furniture relationships can be judged properly.
