This Antique Tehran Rug, measuring 2.92 by 1.86 metres, dates back to the 1920s and represents a remarkable example of Persian craftsmanship. Hand-knotted using natural dyes, it features a wool pile on a cotton foundation, ensuring durability and classic authenticity.
The rug’s design centres on a vertical tree-of-life motif that runs symmetrically through the field, creating a balanced and harmonious composition. This tree-of-life scene is a traditional representation of paradise, with branches extending outward to display a rich variety of flora and fauna. Detailed depictions include flowering trees, birds, deer, lions, and smaller animals, all rendered with clear precision against an ivory background.
Colour plays an important role in the rug’s visual impact. Deep blue and brown tones form the tree branches, while accents of red, green, soft turquoise, and muted gold highlight the blossoms, leaves, and wildlife. The careful arrangement of motifs provides a sense of depth, giving the impression of a layered garden rather than a flat surface.
This rug is a distinguished collectible piece, suitable for formal interiors or any setting where it can be appreciated as both an artwork and a textile. Its size and detailed design make it a statement feature that complements heritage or traditional décor.
Selected pieces can be viewed in the intended room so scale, colour and furniture relationships can be judged properly.
