Unlike commercial rugs, samplers were crafted as study pieces to explore new patterns, train apprentices, or test design layouts. This particular example dates from the mid-1800s and is valued for its eclectic mix of floral bouquets, botehs (an early form of the paisley pattern), vases, and medallion fragments.

The rug’s ivory background acts as a neutral canvas, highlighting the diverse jewel-toned blues, reds, and greens that bring each motif to life. The corners feature contrasting spandrels, with one incorporating parts of a detailed medallion design. Framing the piece is a sapphire-blue border filled with lively blossoms, leaves, and animal forms, adding depth and vibrancy.

Its rustic charm and creative freedom suggest it was likely woven in a provincial workshop or by a master artisan pursuing personal design exploration rather than mass production. This sampler rug is a collectible piece for those interested in the history and evolution of Persian carpet artistry.

Key Features

Handwoven in Bakhtiari region, Iran

Sampler rug with diverse traditional motifs and design experimentation

Ivory ground with rich jewel tones of blue, red, and green

Includes floral sprays, botehs, medallion fragments, and vases

Small size, under 0.8 x 1.2 metres

Please note: This rug is part of a private collection and is not available for sale.
